Evan John 55 Coychurch 1816 Farmer of 100 Acres Head

Christian name could be Euan. Farm name misspelt by the Enumerator as Gweinllwyn.

Evan John 26 Coychurch 1845 Son

Obviously born prior to the move to the Bettws Farm

Christopher John 23 Coychurch 1848 Son

John John 21 Bettws 1850 Son

A possible conclusion maybe that they moved from Coychurch area in 1850, as the older sons were born there and all of the later children were born in Bettws. Imaginative naming !

Mary John 12 Bettws 1859 Daughter

Quite a significant gap in the ages of her next older brother.

Sarah John 10 Bettws 1861 Daughter

Wonder if the last three children were the result of a second marriage ?

1876 Documents originating with the Maesteg Permanent Benefit Building Society dated 27 Jan 1876, and 15 March 1877, show that a Jenkin Thomas tookout a mortgage to build four cottages “being part of a certain farm called Gwernllwyn situate in the parish of Bettws in the said county of Glamorgan. Measured as being 773square yards or therabout.” This was signed by a John Popkin Traherne as well as a Dissenting Minister and an Inn Keeper from Maesteg. However, it appears that the cottages were never built. The present alignment of the outhouses at Gwernllwyn Fawr Farm just might have been the position but this is supposition in the extreme.
