1876 Documents originating with the Maesteg Permanent Benefit Building Society dated 27 Jan 1876, and 15 March 1877, show that a Jenkin Thomas tookout a mortgage to build four cottages “being part of a certain farm called Gwernllwyn situate in the parish of Bettws in the said county of Glamorgan. Measured as being 773square yards or therabout.” This was signed by a John Popkin Traherne as well as a Dissenting Minister and an Inn Keeper from Maesteg. However, it appears that the cottages were never built. The present alignment of the outhouses at Gwernllwyn Fawr Farm just might have been the position but this is supposition in the extreme.
